Community Impact & Strategic Programs

UMatterawareness is a lived-experience-led charity based in the Hunter Region.

As the official Suicide Prevention Network of Maitland and a partner to the national body, Wesley Lifeforce, we are dedicated to fostering connection, reducing stigma, and providing safe spaces for community members to navigate inner pain and prioritize their wellbeing.

Through the power of our core message – Umatter – we aim to ensure every individual in our region feels safer to care for themselves and empowered to speak up.

Core Annual Programming

Our calendar is designed to provide consistent touchpoints for the community, ranging from high-visibility awareness events to intimate peer-support spaces.

Peer Support & Skill Building

  • The Thornton Peer Support Hub: Launching April 13. A physical space for lived experience connection. Held the first Monday of every month (4:00 PM – 7:00 PM)
  • Mental Health Literacy: In partnership with Wesley Lifeforce, we host four introductory mental health courses annually across the Hunter Region to equip locals with intervention skills.
  • Pop-Up Advocacy: Active presence at major local events, including a dedicated peer support space at Maitland Steamfest (April 18–19).

Major Awareness Events

  • Annual Memorial Walk (February): Our flagship event bringing together over 1,000 locals and 25+ service providers to walk in solidarity and remembrance.
  • UMatter Day (3rd Friday of June): A local evening event centered on storytelling. It serves as a platform for empowerment, allowing the community to share experiences and affirm the value of self and others.
  • World Suicide Prevention & R U OK? Day (September 10): A dual-impact day featuring a community presence at Greenhills during the day and a formal memorial service in the early evening.

Compassion & Connection Initiatives

  • Community Christmas BBQ (November 27): A free festive gathering in Maitland Park featuring Santa and Frosty, designed to foster holiday spirit and belonging.
  • Christmas Morning Support (December 25): * Early Morning: Free BBQ in Maitland Park for those struggling with isolation.
  • Mid-Morning: A mobile peer-support pop-up at the Maitland Train Station.
